It tends to show up as a kind of freeze response: a child looks at a maths problem, feels a spike of stress, and their working memory (the part of the brain that actually needs to be free to work through the problem) gets hijacked by that stress response. The result looks like “not understanding,” but it’s actually more like a kind of mental gridlock triggered by fear of getting it wrong.
This matters because it changes what actually helps. If the issue were purely a knowledge gap, more drilling would fix it. Exam-specific stress often responds well to practice under timed, low-stakes conditions to build familiarity with the pressure itself. Longstanding maths anxiety needs the more foundational rebuilding described above, alongside whatever exam-specific practice is also needed.
A Word on Your Own Relationship With Maths
This one’s a bit uncomfortable to bring up, but it matters, so we’ll say it plainly: your own history with maths, and how you talk about it, has more influence on your child than almost anything else in this article.
If you routinely say things like “I was never good at maths either” — even said warmly, even said to make your child feel less alone — you may unintentionally be signalling that maths struggles are hereditary or fixed, which works against everything we’ve just covered about growth and effort. It’s a completely understandable thing to say, and plenty of genuinely lovely, supportive parents say it without realising the effect. But it’s worth catching yourself and reframing where you can: “Maths didn’t click for me straight away either, but I got better at it with practice” carries a very different message than “I was never a maths person,” even though both are honest.
Similarly, visible parental stress around homework time — sighing, tension in your voice, a tightness that your child picks up on even if you think you’re hiding it — tends to transfer directly. This is worth paying attention to, not to alarm you, but because it’s actually a helpful sign of how much rebuilding confidence in maths specifically can matter more broadly. Kids who work through a genuine maths anxiety cycle — who go from avoidance to small wins to real, felt competence — often carry that experience of “I struggled with something and got better at it” into other areas of their life too.
